It started with young eyes
Trying to make sense of the world they live in,
Images and sounds we had never heard before,
Spun by elders to make,
Some sense,
Of a nonsensical narrative.
Starting with a bang
And ending with a bang
Now that love has been sacrificed for hate.
After decades
An unbelievable tragedy
Is unfolding before my aging eyes
All neatly tied up
In a devastating virus
No-one is able to stop.
It began with a letting go of your God
Or Higher Power,
And expecting us to do it
On our own.
Now the thug and the lie have taken a superior stance
And we are too weak to fight
What we know
Is a losing battle.
The world is burning
Violence is a new kind of love
Hard to resist
That sense of satisfaction
That discipline lacks.
So it’s self gratification
Before delayed
But it’s meaningless in the shadow
Of a fading light.
